- Features: The color of males'
brow, crown of head, and back head is browny black. The
color of breast is reddish wine with light brown tint. The
side of the breast is dark, and it has black brown spots.
The stomach is white with yellowish brown tint, and the
belly is gray. The sides and the side of breast are gray.
The lower feathers covering wings are brown, which have
white dappled design behind. The wings and tail are brown.
The number of tail feathers is 14. The beak is black with
the tint of livid. The legs are ashy yellow. The color of
females' brow, crown of head, and back head is dark brown.
The feathers have the edges whose color are creamy with
reddish rusty tint. The face near the upper beak has the
creamy white circle. The breast is creamy with reddish rusty
tint, and it has dark brown half-moon patterns
- Mode of life: They are passing
birds. They come to lakes and marshes, marshlands, ponds,
rice fields, rivers, and bays, and usually dwell on the
flat. They sleep around the safe lakes and marshes or marshland
in a small group during the daytime, and they get into action
when the glow of the setting sun become deep.
- Call: Males are heard "ko-ro-ko-ro",
and females are heard "gwat-gwat-gwat" in an undertone
- Breeding time: They breed
among bushes of hill or dry places. They lay eggs from early
in April till early in July. The number of eggs of the same
litter is 6-9, and only females brood over eggs for hatching.
- Taste: They live on seed
of grass, grain, rice, water plants, aquatic insects, invertebrate
animals, and melanian snail.
- Range: They can be found
in the eastern part of Siberia, the northern part of Sakhalin,
and the Kamchatka Peninsula. They pass the winter in Korea,
Japan, and China.
