- Features: The color of males'
stomach side from brow to waist is gray. The shoulders and
brow are light brown, and the brow is lighter. The fur-shaped
feathers in front of the eyes are black, and the edges of
eyes are creamy ashy white. The cheek, the ear feathers,
and the side of neck are gray. The upper feathers covering
tail is white. The number of tail feathers is 12 and they
are angular. The first feather of wings is long, but the
second is short. The bottom of chin, throat, and the upper
part of breast are light gray. The beak is slate color and
the legs are yellowish brown.
- Mode of life: They are winter
season birds. They usually live alone. They keep stopping
in a spot of the sky outstretching their tail, fluttering,
and stretching their long legs below when they search for
food. They take a rest on a stake or a rock of the ground.
- Call: They seldom cry, but
they make a strong noise like "ket-ket-ket" around
their nest.
- Breeding place: They dwell
in plains, the swampy lands dotted with willows, and marshlands.
- Breeding time: They lay eggs
from late in April till about the middle of May. The number
of eggs of the same litter is 4-5. The color of eggs is
usually white with green tint.
- Taste: They live on the birds
including Passeriformes and ducks and Mammalia like rodents.
- Range: They pass the winter
in China, the northern part of Indonesia, Korea, and Japan.
