[Family Gelidium amansii] Gelidium amansii Lamouroux

  • Features: The body is lumpy and flat with the shape of fine thread. The lower part has the wide sides. It is divided into four or five shapes of feather, and the trig is alternate or opposite. The trig in its earliest days is cracked just like shape of feather and has the shape of a cone. The twig is crooked or straight, and the long ones in small twigs are mixed with short ones while the long twig has just one or cracked one. The twigs are close to one another, and the ones in the deep place are long and rare. The lower part of the body is flat, and the both sides are thin while some upper part are cylindrical.
  • Mode of Life: It is a perennial plant and live for three or four years. Sporophyte and gametophyte regularly go through alternation of generation. It usually emits the spore from May till November, then the mother-body go through a withering period which leaves just a base behind. Next spring a vertical style sprouts from the base and grows. The young one germinated from the spore also grows slowly till winter, but it grows rapidly from next spring. It is usually found in the reefy district of coast and in the clear water where a tide is coming and going well.
  • Range: It lives in every coast in Korea, especially in the coast around Gyeongsangbuk-do.
  • Special Feature: The body is changeable.
