- A novelist, Chae Man Sik, was born in Impi-myeon, Gunsan,
in 1902, when the people made a poor living in unrest under
the western imperialism. His literary work reflects the
reality in those days and criticizes the social circumstance
by describing the peasantry suffering from poverty, the
intellectuals full of distress, and the ruined people of
the lower classes.
Muddy Water published in 1937, one of his most important
works, is the masterpiece describing the realistic sorrow
of the people in this part of the country under the colonial
rule of Japan in 1930's. The background of the novel is
Gunsan, and comprehends the corrupt society in those days,
and Chae Man Sik is recognized as a master of the satirical
techniques and modern realism.
Chae Man Sik Memorial Hall established in honor of his achievement
in literature gives his literary works at a glance.
